Star Wars Outer Rim from Fantasy Flight Games

Something looks familiar.

Something coming from Fantasy Flight Games in the Star Wars universe sometime in the next few months.

Late last week (Editor – Late to the party as usual!), FFG announced Star Wars: Outer Rim, a game where you can play as one of the rogues in that galaxy far, far away.

The game is designed by Corey Konieczka and Tony Fanchi and plays 1-4 players.

You get to trade goods, do jobs, maybe fight off some of the bad guys, outfit your ship and hire crew.

Hmmmmm.

I’m a big fan of the Firefly game, though it’s too big and unwieldy to play too often (not to mention make my Top 25).

There are definitely shades of that game (as well, apparently, as Merchants & Marauders), but that’s not to say this is a blatant rip-off or anything.

But there are some similarities, and they seem to be the best parts of the game (or at least Firefly anyway).

The map looks pretty interesting, though a bit linear. I wonder if there will be more interesting ways to get around on it.

You also get to do jobs and interact with many of the darker denizens of the Star Wars universe.

“In performing your jobs you’ll have to avoid patrols from the Hutts, Crime Syndicates, Imperials, and Rebels. While these patrols can be nuisances that stand in your path, destroying a powerful patrol can increase your fame, and doing jobs for any of these factions can turn them into helpful allies—but helping one faction may harm your reputation with the other major factions of the galaxy, encouraging them to hunt you down wherever you may hide.”

You definitely do have to have a ship too.

“Even if it’s not glamorous, you won’t get far without a ship. Every would-be legend begins with a starter ship that gives you the opportunity to take your first steps into a larger world. But as your legend grows, so do your resources, and as you find success you can improve and upgrade your ship, even trading it in for a newer model like a modified YT-1300. By meeting certain conditions, you can even transform these ships into iconic Star Wars vessels like the Millennium Falcon!”

The concept sounds really cool, and so does the 2-3 hour timeline.

And will it be as much of a table hog as Firefly?

We don’t know yet.

The rest of the game does look seriously cool.
