Dude Take Your Turn – 8 Years and Counting

Ark Nova - Marine Worlds - Aquarium Animals

Sometimes you go on a journey and at the beginning you can’t even contemplate how far you will have travelled by the time you get to the end of it.

Especially when the journey seems to be a never-ending, yet incredibly fulfilling, one.

Today is the 8th anniversary of the beginning of Dude Take Your Turn, with the first post essentially being this:

I Am Here

Now, 8 years and 926 posts later, I’m still here.

Through many (way too many) mental health and “why am I still doing this?” lulls, I am still here.

And I will continue to be!

I never thought that this blog would be going strong after all these years.

Combat Commander – After Action Report – Scenario 86 – Keep Calm and Carry On

Never has a scenario title been so apt!

As you shall see.

The subtitle for this post is The Ballad of Sergeant Hawes.

Welcome to another tale from the Combat Commander ladder, that monthly tournament of one of the greatest games out there. Administered by the honourable Patrick Pence (he of Patrick’s Tactics & Tutorials fame), the ladder allows you to play in a monthly tournament against great and friendly players.

And what could be better than playing Combat Commander at least 12 times a year?

After a win last month, I was hoping to continue my winning ways and stay above .500 in my ladder career, but this scenario looked a bit tough for my side.

This month’s scenario is from the Sea Lion battle pack, scenarios that take place during the alternate history German invasion of Great Britain.

Scenario 86, Keep Calm and Carry On, takes place during the initial invasion when a sleepy British village wakes up to find German paratroopers landing. The Germans are trying to cut off the supply route for the main British force south of the village.

The local defense force consists of old World War I veterans and 19-year-old Ian Peasley, who takes it upon himself to run up to the very high church tower and see if he could pick off some Germans.

My opponent was Bob D, from out east so we had a 3-hour time difference. Thankfully, we were able to get organized to play Saturday morning (my time).

Combat Commander Europe - Scenario 86 - British Setup

(Don’t forget that you can click on a picture to make it larger)

Here’s the beginning setup, with the Germans not yet doing their random card draw for where they land.

See all of those SSR1 markers? The British (tan – me) have to set up within that box, with Peasley having to set up in that one specific hex.

Friday Night Shots – Expansions to be Never Played Again

Suburbia 5 Star - Market Board

(See comments below for an even better example that I should have remembered! But I haven’t played it in ages so it was completely off my radar)

Welcome to another Friday Night Shots!

This is almost becoming a monthly thing rather than a weekly thing, so my apologies for that. Topics just aren’t really presenting themselves on a timely basis.

Either that, or I just don’t feel up to writing about them.

*Waves to all of the reviews I still need to write*

However, tonight’s topic just jumped out at me earlier this week during one of our lunchtime games.

So welcome back to the bar and pull up a chair. I’ll get you a libation of your choice.

Even if it’s water.

Since last time you were here, I did manage to finally get the jukebox fixed.

It now only plays Justin Bieber every other song instead of every song.

That is Progress gif

I’m working on it.

Oh yes, back to tonight’s topic.

For those of you who like expansions (as I do), I’m wondering if you’ve encountered any that actively turned you off and said “nope, I’m just going to play the base game from now on.”

Or at least play without that particular expansion, even if you play with others.

We’ve had two instances of that in the last couple of weeks that really made me want to talk about them.

The prompt for this story came up when we played Space Base for the first time in a few months this week.

Space Base - Cards 2
Nice art!

I have all of the stuff for this game, from the Shy Pluto expansion, the Terra Proxima expansion (both story-based modular ones), along with the Biodome and Dreadnought expansions that add more colonies and ships to the various decks.

Last year, we added the Genesis expansion (which I really should review), which is mainly just cards, and we love the game!

However, after finishing the two story-based expansions, we have just had no interest in including the stuff from them (except the cards that don’t involve that new stuff).

The game added a 13th area on your player board for cool stuff, little dice that you could purchase and roll each turn (not just on your turn) to possibly get you stuff, and fighter tokens that you would use to pay for those dice.

We just didn’t find them that fun. They add to the setup time, add to the play time, add to the complexity, and don’t add to the enjoyment.

It was just too much, so I went through and removed all the cards that referenced this material.

Space Base - Card
From the Genesis expansion, which is why it got left in!

If a card from those expansions just added things like diagonal arrows or something (which actually are also from other expansions and mini-expansions), then they stayed in.

But no fighter cards.

These are just expansions we will ignore from now on.

It’s too bad when an expansion just doesn’t really improve the game much.

Another game and expansion that is borderline on this list (I haven’t actually fully decided yet) is Vale of Eternity and the Artifacts expansion.

As you know if you read the review, I am in love with Vale of Eternity. It is such an awesome card game, almost giving you a collectible card game feel during play.

The expansion is…well, I don’t know. I need to decide for the review that’s upcoming, but I have to say that I’m lukewarm on it right now.

A big part of the problem is that it seemingly added at least 15 minutes to the playtime, and sometimes more.

We finished the base game in an average of 45 minutes, making it a perfect lunchtime game at the office.

Vale of Eternity - Artifacts

Three plays with the expansion, and two of them ended prematurely because we had to get back to work (so probably over an hour, as of course there is setup time too) and one of them barely fit into our lunch break.

Adding time isn’t necessarily bad if it adds fun, but I’m not sure how much fun it added.

That’s what I need to decide before reviewing it.

The new cards were great and they don’t really need the artifacts in order to succeed.

In that way, it’s kind of modular as well.

Even if we end up ditching the artifacts, we will probably keep the cards integrated.

Some of them are really neat.

The final one I want to talk about is the Suburbia 5* expansion, which succeeds in the hard task (or easy if you don’t like the game!) of making the game terrible to play.

Suburbia 5 Star - Tiles 2

The expansion added a bunch of new tiles, including many that used the Star mechanic, where getting stars moved up up the star track.

The star track determined turn order (so if you dominated it, you were always first player). Moving along the track gave you some income bonuses and reputation increases.

Suburbia 5 Star - Market Board

Also, each round, the track was evaluated and if you had the most (or tied for the most) stars, you gained a population. If you had the least (or tied for the least), you lost a population.

Finally, for endgame goals, whoever has the highest star power broke all ties. No longer could you deny somebody a goal because you got that one higher population or that one more blue tile to tie them, meaning that nobody received the award.

Nope. If you locked up first place on the star track, you won the goal if you were tied.

It’s been a long time since I’ve played Suburbia with this expansion, but the two times I played with it, pretty much everybody at the table just hated it.

Which is too bad, because the Suburbia Inc expansion was amazing!

Those are three expansions that I really never want to use again (ok, two expansions and one that’s kind of on the fence), even though I love the base game.

What about you?

Any expansions just dead to you (assuming you like expansions to begin with) even though you like the game otherwise?

Let me know in the comments.

New to Me – February 2025

Unconscious Mind - Main Board

Welcome to another in the continuing series (8 years and running!) of “new to me” boardgames posts.

In a few days, I’ll be celebrating 8 years of blogging, and one of the things I am proud of is that I have never missed a month posting about the “new to me” games I played the previous month.

There have been some months where there weren’t any (or the one that I did play wasn’t really worth talking about, but that was just during COVID when my blogging motivation really hit rock bottom). But if there were new to me games to talk about, I was there!

Even if sometimes, in my worst blogging lulls, it was posted during the last week of the next month.

I’m also quite proud of the fact that the “Cult of the New to Me” has kind of caught on a bit. Ok, maybe it was just one podcaster who may not even be around anymore, but it was nice to get some recognition anyway!

In February, we missed our first Sunday game day due to some event going on, and so I thought it would be a lean month.

However, an all-day Saturday marathon game session, plus some interesting new games coming to our Sunday (and a lunchtime new to me game, which is unusual!), made it so I have a lot to talk about this month.

Sadly for the cult, all of the games were either from 2023 or 2024, so there were rumblings.

Rebellion

But I kept them in check by placating them with some awesome sushi (I was lucky since I don’t know what awesome sushi looks like!)

I should probably play at least one older new to me game in March, though.

Just so they’ll shut up.

I didn’t say that out loud, did I?

Furtive

Anyway, without further ado (all of my ado was sliced up by a lightsaber anyway), let’s get started!

February 2025 Gaming

BG Stats - Feb 2025 - Grid format

February wasn’t a great month for me overall, in terms of posting (or mental health, really).

But it was a great month for games!

Missing the first Sunday of the month due to weather, and then only one game on Super Bowl Sunday, I thought it was going to be a slow month.

However, an all-day marathon on Saturday plus some good gaming at lunch in the office added up to the first non-convention month at over 20 plays since June 2024.

Here’s what I played in February.

Games Played - BG Stats - Feb 2025 - List

And here that list is in grid format!

BG Stats - Feb 2025 - Grid format

Thanks so much to the incomparable BG Stats app for providing this data.

Of course, I’ll talk about the new to me games in a separate post (there were six!), but let’s go over some highlights of the previously played games.

Wingspan: Asia expansion coming to digital in Summer 2025

(Edit 6/3/25): The date’s been announced. June 16 across all platforms! Yes!!!!

Even more exciting news for fans of the wonderful Wingspan app from Monster Couch!

Yes, the latest (and last so far) expansion to the game, Wingspan: Asia, will be coming to the digital platforms in the Summer of 2025.

Monster Couch made the announcement today and, given how great the other expansions have been implemented, I can only say that I can’t wait to see this!

Here’s the announcement trailer.

I’ve played with the Asia cards once, a couple of years ago, and they do add some really interesting mechanics to the game.

First, it adds a “duet” mode if you want to play a different version of the game rather than just playing Wingspan as a 2-player game.

I haven’t tried that, so I’m not sure how well that works, but I enjoy the game 2-player anyway (other than the tendency for the food tray to stagnate).

Judging from the Monster Couch page about the expansion, it doesn’t look like they’re implementing the 6-7 player “flock mode” that the tabletop game has, but I can see how that might be difficult for the electronic version of it.

The page also says this:

“Players who are interested in playing with other birders – we have you covered! Wingspan: Asia Expansion enables cross-platform gaming with players from all over the world. No matter where you are, you can test your nature preserve-creating skills against players from around the world.”

I think that’s already in the game? Though the fact that you can’t create an account means that you can’t have the same username on different platforms is still annoying.

Maybe they mean that this will change?

I hope so!

The other expansions have added round-end bird powers and game-end bird powers, so they can’t really add powers like that.

But some of the birds do look interesting!

From the Monster Couch page:

Wingspan Asia - Bird

It seems that this expansion does add a bit more interaction with other players.

When I played it, it was mixed in with all of the other expansions’ birds, so I don’t remember too much detail.

But the birds do look interesting, and the Duel mode might be cool!

This expansion adds 90 new birds and, of course, some new end of round goals.

For the app, they’ll add some Asia-inspired new backgrounds as well!

Look for it this Summer and if you’re on Steam, put it on your wishlist now!

It doesn’t mention iOS and Android, so I’m not sure whether it will all be the same day, but it does mention X-Box and I can’t imagine that the consoles would be before mobile.

I could be wrong, though.

What do you think of all this?

Let me know in the comments.

Combat Commander – After Action Report – Scenario 78 – By These Deeds They Shall Be Known

Combat Commander Europe - Scenario 78 - Setup

After a few months’ streak of fun games that ultimately lead to more futility, it was time to see if I could end this losing streak.

I hadn’t lost this many Combat Commander games in a row in quite a while!

Would I be able to right the ship and get above .500 again?

This tale from the Combat Commander ladder will tell you that.

The ladder is the monthly tournament of one of the best games out there run by the contemplative Patrick Pence, he of Patrick’s Tactics & Tutorials fame.

This month’s scenario is from the Fall of the West battle pack, which is essentially the fall of France in 1940.

However, thankfully, this month’s scenario had the British and not the French troops (nothing against the French in general, but that 1-discard limit is killer!).

My opponent was Ben S, a guy who has been away from the ladder for quite a while but is making his return to competitive play.

Combat Commander Europe - Scenario 78 - Setup

(Don’t forget that you can click on a picture to expand it)

In the scenario, the Germans (grey – Ben) are coming from the bottom of the board while the British (tan – Me) are defending a line trying to keep the Germans from breaking through.

Terraforming Mars Legacy – Kickstarting in September?

(Edit 8/26/25) – Apparently this has now been delayed to November, as per Jonathan Fryxelius on BGG)

Double post Friday!

But I didn’t want to rest on this one, because while this isn’t the biggest surprise in the world (if you read a lot of Terraforming Mars stuff on Boardgame Geek, it’s been pretty widely predicted), it’s still pretty big news.

One of the longest-running requests/predictions for the game, given the number of expansions already and how the Big Box really can’t take much more, is a legacy version of the game.

According to Enoch Fryxelius on…one of the social media platforms (could be Blue Sky, could be Twitter (I refuse to call it X)), Season 1 will jump to Kickstarter in September!

Terraforming Mars - Legacy news

Many thanks Satchmo over on Boardgame Geek for posting this.

Obviously nothing else has been posted about it. No BGG link and no pictures of it actually in practice (other than maybe the top tweet? I don’t know), but it’s still pretty big news!

I’ll keep an eye on things and see when anything else shakes out.

I’ll definitely report it here.

Big news is very cool, even if I’m not one who can really play Legacy games.

And Terraforming Mars big news?

That’s even bigger.

Stay tuned for more info.

Friday Night Shots – What Does “Solving” a Game Mean?

The White Castle - Main Board

Hey there! Welcome back to the bar.

It’s been a long month and a half, hasn’t it?

It’s been under renovations, but we’re back!

Until everything breaks down again.

I’m going to try and do these posts much more regularly than they have been coming out.

The first of the year being in February is not good.

But hey, at least the jukebox isn’t playing Bieber anymore!

What? It’s playing bad disco instead?

Kermit the Frog typing

Renovations never end, do they?

(I’m not sure how typing will fix the jukebox problem, but whatever. He’s the expert)

Sit right down, grab a drink, and let’s talk about boardgames!

Namely, in tonight’s case, what does “solving” a boardgame really mean?

And what should it mean?

New to Me – January 2025

Arcs - Map During Play

Another year and another month of new to me games.

It’s 2025 now and things are still going strong on the new to me front, with four whole new ones this last month!

No first impressions posts this time, though, so I’ll be talking about all of them here.

And they were all good!

Or at least intriguing.

However, the Cult of the New to Me was not really happy with me.

The oldest game was from 2022!

I heard rumblings of a revolt coming.

Immediate Discussion - Monty Python Life of Brian gif

Hopefully next month will be better for them and they’ll quiet down.

Being a cult leader can be hard work…and dangerous.

Anyway, without further ado (all of my ado was blasted to smithereens by some weird-looking spaceship anyway), let’s begin!
