A Gaming Life
It’s time for another storage solution using the Cube4Me trays provided to me by Rails on Boards.
These plastic trays are pretty cool because, if you want to (which my good friend Zilla doesn’t seem to want to), you can actually nest them together to minimize their footprint in the box!
Anyway, enough ranting about friends.
Previously I had put together a tray set for The Last Hundred Yards – Airborne Over Europe because that was the only module in the series I had at the time.
However, a few weeks ago, the first one, reprinted edition, arrived on my door step and I had a few remaining trays left over.

Once again, this game is published by GMT Games and designed by Mike Denson.
And one of these days, it will be coming to the table!
It was time to see if the same (or similar) solution would work!
The first game in the series definitely has the same storage problem as the second game did.
You’re only using certain platoons of counters, so bagging them either makes you do a lot of sorting when you’re setting up, or it makes you have a shit-ton of baggies in the game.
(that word will someday be in the dictionary! Or at least searchable on Google).
This design basically uses the same two trays as the second game did: two of the 20-compartment, 15 mm trays with one lid.
What surprised me is that I didn’t have as much trouble fitting all of the counters into the trays.
It’s almost like there are fewer counters than in the second game (which I think is true!)

The US counters are on the bottom along with various neutral counters (control, hero, concealment, wire, assault, etc). The US counters are separated by platoons as well as vehicle platoons and individual counters for MGs and bazookas.
It’s not as full as the second game, but that’s ok! That makes it easy to pull out just the counters you want.
This tray can’t be quite as full since there’s going to be another tray on top of it.

The Germans are on the top, along with all of the firepower tokens, smoke, and fire action counters (as well as the dice!).
As with the Americans, the Germans are separated by platoon along with individual MGs and Anti-tank weapons and vehicle platoons.
Even the red/yellow/green firepower counters, there aren’t nearly the same number as in the Airborne game.

That one is packed pretty tightly, all things considered.

Not even a comparison. (this last picture is from the 2nd edition).
Everything fits perfectly into the box.

And there’s a ton of room to spare!
I have the third game (the Solomon Islands Pacific module) but I don’t have any more trays to use to come up with another solution.
But I will rectify that soon!
Let me know what you think.
(Isn’t “nesting” such a beautiful word?)
