Friday Night Shots – Update & Topic Ideas?

Hey there! Welcome back.

It’s been a couple of weeks.

Sorry about all of that.

Belly up to the bar and let’s chat a bit.

It’s also been a while since I posted anything at all, actually.

I haven’t posted anything since August 15, a whole 10 days. I think that’s my first lull of more than one week this year, which does hearten me somewhat.

Hell, I’m already almost at my typical annual total of posts and there are still 4 months left in the year!

Last weekend was the Dragonflight gaming convention down in Bellevue, Washington. The report on that will be coming soon.

The week leading up to it, I was pretty busy getting ready and doing work stuff and other things that were distracting me. I managed to get my Combat Commander ladder after action report done and I had to call it a week.

I couldn’t even do a post-dated Friday Night Shots for Friday night.

Dragonflight was a ton of fun, but the aftermath hasn’t been.

I didn’t catch Covid, but I came down with a nasty bug that’s still with me, 5 days later (though I am on the upswing). I worked on Monday, but from Tuesday through today, I called in sick because I just wasn’t up to working.

I thought I’d take advantage of the time at home on Tuesday and do a post about the con.

I got about 60 words in and said “no, I can’t focus on this.”

And it’s been that way ever since.

I’m still not really up for it. This post isn’t taking that much mental effort, thankfully.

Next week, as things calm down and I feel a bit better, things will start again.

I have a lot to post about. A number of reviews I’d like to do, along with the Dragonflight retrospective. We’re also getting close to the end of the month, so there will be the “new to me” post and “August gaming” post.

And, of course, Friday Night Shots.

Which brings me to the other topic of this post.

I need topics!

I’ve been lucky previously that things have just been occurring to me, either when reading BGG or in discussions with other gamers.

But I’m tapped out.

I’ll keep thinking, of course, but I’d like your help.

What are some light, breezy boardgaming topics you’d like to talk about? Or like to listen to me talk about, anyway?

I don’t want anything too heavy. Those don’t really fit into the “fun” atmosphere of a Shots post. Also, nothing super-duper contentious (though some mild discussing/arguing is fine).

In other words, I will never address the topic of “what is a wargame” in this post.

I value my life too much

With that, I’m going back to bed and hoping I wake up tomorrow feeling close to 100%.

I’m getting there. I’d say I’m at 80% right now.

Wow, getting sick, sucks.

  1. These things can really knock one down… Get well soon!
As for topics, I’m always interested in where somebody’s taste differs from the mainstream. Unknown game that you try to convert everybody to? Super popular game that you cannot get into yourself? Widely panned game that you love?

  2. Couple of ideas for Friday Night Shots:
    – what color do you like to play and what does that mean?
    – what is your preferred number of players in the game?
    – how many games do you have on “shelf of shame”? (i.e. unplayed games)
    – do you treat digital sessions as real boardgame experience? do you include them in your statistics?
    – do you attend boardgames cons? Why? Why not?

    Hope it will help!
