Hidden Jungle Horror – Final Girl – The Green Terror Review

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Map

One of the conceits with the whole Final Girl franchise of dice-rolling, solo horror games, is that you and your character are the typical “final girl” in various horror films, the one who watches everybody die around her but she ends up defeating the killer before she can be killed herself.

It has expanded a bit in some Final Girl feature films, basically to include female characters who are more professionals (rather than just a camper who happens to be there) but who are still only in this situation by happenstance.

I mean, Ripley didn’t mean to be the sole survivor of her ship when the Alien attacked, right?

The Green Terror moves away from that trope, at least slightly, and thus ends up being one of the least-thematic feature films of the franchise in that respect.

(Please note you can click on a picture to blow it up)

Not that it’s non-thematic in a lot of others, though!

For the first time that I can recall (there are a few films I haven’t played yet), there doesn’t seem to be any real reason for the Final Girl to be there before the killing starts happening.

The Green Terror takes place in an island jungle (Pesadilla Verde) with a killer (Volkar) straight out of the Predator franchise, with invisible movement and everything.

With a bunch of soldiers on the island hunting the Volkar (or whichever killer you use on this island).

Who is this girl, how did she get to this island, and why are these soldiers listening to this girl who is probably not a professional at all?

What, is she a Time Lord or something? The Doctor and his companions can often make military types listen to them…eventually.

All of that is to say that the Final Girl franchise has seemingly evolved again, endlessly adaptable as it should be.

The Green Terror was designed by Evan Derrick with art by Agnieszka Dabrowiecka.

It was published by Van Ryder Games in 2026.

Let’s talk about the Volkar first.

The Volkar is a complicated enough killer that the rule sheet is actually a 2-4 page rulebook instead.

That tells you something!

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Volkar

However, she is a really interesting one to play.

She has two modes: Visible and Concealed.

If she is visible, she’ll attack whatever’s in her space and then conceal herself.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Killer Actions

If concealed, that’s when things get interesting.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Volkar movement

The Volkar has a Movement path based on random cards, with the first card being hidden so you don’t know what she does on her first move from where you last saw her.

Instead of having the killer meeple on the map, you place it on her Finale card and place one origin token on her space and the other token on the first card of the Movement path.

Each concealed turn, she will play a face-up Movement card to her path. A Terror card may then have her place a face-down Movement card (or even two!).

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Volkar Movement

(She also has you roll a die to see if Bloodlust goes up, which is terrible if you suck at rolling).

The Movement path is resolved after one of three things happens: a sixth (or higher!) card is placed in the path, a “Reveal” icon is shown (usually on a Terror card), or if she’s attacked.

(I’ll get into how you do that last bit later).

When resolving, place the killer in the origin space on the map and resolve each card in the path from left to right.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Volkar Movement cards

Almost all of them will give a direction of movement in some fashion, whether it’s toward a certain type of space or using a space’s panic number.

Some do have her stand still and just heal instead.

When a card is resolved, you move her as shown, and then if there’s a Killer action on the card, you perform it if there’s anybody in that space.

So multiple victims can die on a single resolution.

The good thing is that Bloodlust can’t go up when the Volkar is concealed, so victims killed by location Terror cards don’t cause that to happen.

How do you attack her when she’s concealed?

You try to figure out where she is at the end of her current path, and you do an attack on that space.

You resolve the attack, placing the damage markers on this card.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Hidden Damage

You then resolve the Movement path and see if she actually ended up there!

If not, then you resolve the Ambush effect (icon on the bottom of the card) of the final Movement card.

She outfoxed you!

It’s not all terrible evil, though.

You get a new action card called Track, which will hopefully allow you to turn over one or more of those hidden Movement cards.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Track action cards

If you can get a 3-star roll, you can even turn over the origin card!

That will allow you to attack while hidden and be successful almost automatically.

The Dark Powers make all of this harder, of course.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Dark Powers

Stress of the Unknown costs you time when you resolve a hidden card on the Movement path.

Blades in the Dark is brutal for killing victims who are just near her!

(One of the really fun things about the Volkar is sometimes watching her move into a victim’s space and since the Movement card doesn’t have an action, the victim is safe! For now…)

Chameleon of Death just makes attacking her blind even worse. I never did actually try that because I couldn’t get her origin card revealed and I didn’t want to risk it.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Finales

The finales are really neat and can twist things, turning a win into a loss!

With that statement, I’m talking about Self-Destruct.

I was doing so well, having done a bunch of damage to her.

The finale’s revealed, and suddenly I have to go find her (she was all the way across the map), do the final damage to her to kill her, and then get to an exit space, all in three rounds.

I was 1-2 turns short.

Guerilla Warfare is just brutal, though, because she reveals, moves 3 spaces towards you and attacks, and then conceals herself again.

You don’t know what direction she headed with that Movement card!

Rampage just has her viciously attacking you. No more concealment required.

How about her Terror cards?

The minor dark powers have to do with the Movement mechanic and can make your day worse.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Minor Dark Powers

First, there are three of them!

Energy Shield is just a pest, because she builds up extra health on it whenever she produces a hidden Movement card (as opposed to a face-up one), though thankfully only once per turn.

Evasion producing two hidden Movement cards is just terrible too.

Collector has her collect items into her space from the searchable decks. When Collector is discarded, all of those items are available to be searched for in that space.

Hopefully it’s a central location!

The other Terror cards are also, well, terrible for you.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Volkar Terror cards

A lot of them add cards to her Movement path, with Savage Upgrade being particularly nasty because it’s going to bring out a Minor Dark Power card (or indicate how unlucky you are by already having all three of them in the 10-card deck).

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Volkar Terror Cards

Others will just add to the Horror (which is bad because you can’t reveal the Origin card with Track unless you have three dice!).

All in all, I really liked the Volkar as a killer.

The hidden movement is done really well with the cards, and there are no ambiguities on them that I could tell.

It literally tells you how to resolve ties (highest panic number, alphabetically, reverse alphabetically, whatever it says on the card) and the tension just mounts as more cards are put out there.

The fact that you can see a bunch of them ratchets up the tension even more than if they were all hidden, since you can kind of work things out, but if you’re wrong, wow you could be very wrong.

It all depends on what that first move is.

The Volkar is definitely a winner in my book.

What about Pesadilla Verde as a location?

It’s pretty good too.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Pesadilla Verde map

The highlight of this map, and what can make it difficult, is the river that runs through it.

You can cross the river in multiple places and you can move down the river.

But you can’t move up the river (unless an Item card allows you to).

The Search locations are scattered pretty widely, with the Rebel Camp being all by itself with only one way in or out.

The exits are in two opposite corners, but there is a third exit…for a while.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Huey

The Huey helicopter starts the game on the map as well, and is an exit location too.

But you can only use it once, because the chopper then leaves with its saved victims.

The conceit with Pesadilla Verde is that the victims aren’t really “victims.”

They’re soldiers, who want to hunt and kill the bad guy rather than run away.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Soldiers

Soldiers have a bunch of different attributes. You can order one of them to move or attack as a group, and if you unlock it, you can even have a second group do the same.

They initially can only attack in their space, but if you unlock that upgrade, they can attack an adjacent space as well.

Their damage goes up when you unlock that attribute.

Typically, they are subject to Friendly Fire when they attack (if you roll a 1-2, one of them gets hit) but you can upgrade that.

Finally, when you try to rescue a soldier (who will follow you with no problem), it will cost you 2 Time because they are resisting the rescue.

They want to get back into the action!

But you can upgrade that and then they don’t cost you any time.

They still panic like victims do, so if you want them to attack, you’re probably going to have to upgrade their range.

They won’t spend much time in the killer’s space, most likely.

How do you do these upgrades?

You also get a new action card with this location, called Train.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Train action cards

This allows you to unlock an ability (or potentially lock an already-unlocked one, which happened to me too often), at the cost of some time.

Personally, I found them pretty useless. I unlocked the upgrade to not cost Time to save and then saved as many as I could, though part of that is because the Final Girls in this film have amazing ultimate abilities (more on that later).

Would I do that with less-awesome Final Girls?

Maybe I might use them to help attack the killer.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Setup cards

The setup cards are pretty varied, which is nice.

There are some really cool items on this island that will greatly help you in preventing your own death.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Weapons

The M-16 is amazing, but so is the Mini-Gun.

One additional damage per star in your To-Hit roll?

That could be 2-3 more damage, or maybe even 4.

Or 6 if you have flipped Alois over to her ultimate ability (more on that later).

You can use both Bowie Knives if you can actually find them, to get 3 additional damage (instead of just 2 that they would normally give you).

The Compound bow is an easy way to do some damage from afar, and even more so if you can find a grenade to slap onto the arrow.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Items

Other items aren’t weapons, but can also come in handy.

Like the aforementioned grenade, which you can also just throw from an adjacent space to do some damage.

The Radio can call in an airstrike that could be devastating.

If you don’t roll badly like I did.

The Cursed Idol thankfully never came up for me, but that would suck, preventing you from searching until you can manage to get rid of it.

The Booby Trap can also be an amazing way to trip up the Volkar as long as you can get it in her path.

What are some of the events like?

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Special Victims

The special victims can be annoying, at least two of them.

The Archeologist doesn’t make a lot of sense anywhere but the Ancient Ruins.

Why would he make it harder to search at the Rebel Camp or at the Supply Depot?

I can understand them being resistant to you desecrating a ruined temple or something.

The other locations, I just have to shake my head.

The Rebel Leader will be consolidating victims at the Rebel Camp, notoriously far away from any exit space.

He won’t follow you, so you can’t rescue him unless he ends up in an exit space.

However, there’s no penalty if he dies, so…maybe let him die?

Sgt. Weathers is so cool (and appropriately named, since Carl Weathers starred in the original Predator movie).

He helps with his men’s attack range and movement, but sadly not damage.

You have to keep him alive, though, because you gain two Horror if he dies.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Event Cards

Other events are both good and bad, and some can even help you.

Piranhas just attack everybody, so could hurt the killer if they walk through that river space.

Rebel Raiding Party is just annoying, bringing a bunch of stuff to the Rebel Camp in addition to what’s already there.

Fine if you’re already close to it, but not fine if you were just about to search the Supply Depot.

I love, love, love the “Get to the Choppa” card, though.

A little spoiler, both Final Girls with this film either cost health or gain Horror when you save victims.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Huey

If you get a bunch of people to the Huey with this event card, though, that won’t matter!

Alois loses health?

Just gain it right back.

Get 5 people to the Clearing where the Huey is and watch her go Ultimate right away.

Even better, if you’ve already used the Huey and it’s gone, it comes back!

This card almost single-handedly gave me the win in that game (I’ll show you why when I get to the Final Girls themselves).

Let’s talk about Pesadilla Verde’s Terror cards, though.

Those aren’t always so good.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Pesadilla Verde Terror Cards

Some will bring Events out, not all of them good.

Flash Flood whisks people down the river, and really hurts if you end up in the lowest river space.

That could include the killer, though, so that’s good!

Or the soldiers get jumpy and possibly end up killing their comrade accidentally.

Jungle Heat is just a brutal killer attack, with the possibility of a soldier literally panicking into the killer’s space.

Collapsing the Cave deprives you of another exit space.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Pesadilla Verde Terror cards

Even worse, there’s another minor dark power in here!

Locking an upgrade really sucks.

The Green Nightmare, though, can actually help you extend the game at the cost of one Horror each time it comes out.

That’s actually not too bad, as long as you can absorb the Horror gain.

I honestly don’t know why you would ever choose to gain 3 Horror, but maybe an expert can let me know.

I enjoyed the whole soldier mechanic for Pesadilla Verde, but I’m not sure exactly how much.

I had trouble picturing why my character was involved in this at all.

I guess maybe she’s a scientist or some other civilian in the expedition?

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Map

This is yet another location/killer combination that might shine more when they’re not combined.

With shooting the unknown being so dangerous, I was reluctant to actually have the soldier’s fire at all.

Against a normal, visible killer, I wouldn’t avoid that.

The idea of “saving” the soldiers doesn’t really make a lot of sense to me either, though it’s good that their initial response to that is reluctance, costing you time to convince them.

I found that whole thing a little offputting.

The mechanics themselves are great and the island is too, though again the layout is weird and not very helpful for moving around efficiently to search or the like.

It’s great with Volkar, but I’ll have to see how it works with a “normal” killer.

The weapons are really cool and the items are too.

Overall, this is a nice location but just a bit too off for me.

Now, about these amazing Final Girls.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Final Girls

Looking at them, you have to wonder how they can even function in this game without dying.

Every time you save a victim, you either gain Horror or lose life.

Sure, you have the Huey and that event card in this film, but what if that doesn’t come out or if you’re at a different location?

Health and Horror management is essential to playing these two.

But they are so worth unlocking as soon as you can.

Final Girl - The Green Terror - Final Girl Ultimates

Because their ultimate abilities are the best I’ve ever seen.

Roll 6 dice for a horror roll, no matter what?

Yes, please.

Never fail a horror roll again unless you don’t have any cards to discard for a 3-4 result?

Yes, even more!

How is this even allowed?

You just have to be careful getting there, unfortunately.

Because getting there can get you killed.

Taking the whole film together, I really enjoyed this one, though the Volkar and especially the Final Girls more than the location.

The location has some issues, but they are manageable and they are fun to play.

The Volkar hidden movement system is ingenious and very tense, and you can’t go wrong with these Final Girls.

Have you played this one?

Let me know what you think of it in the comments.
