South Tigris Trilogy Expansions from Garphill Games – On Kickstarter Now!

Tides of Trade - Expansion Board

Yes, I know what you’re thinking.

“Oh, another Garphill Games post by Dave…it must be Tuesday.”

But this is big news for me! And anybody else who likes the South Tigris trilogy of games from Garphill, or even if you just like one or two of them!

Today the Kickstarter campaign launched for the expansions to all three games, as well as the Moonsaga expansion that unites all three games.

Instead of doing individual launches for all three, they’ve decided to do one big launch, but where you can pick and choose which ones you want.

They all sound amazing, but yes, I could be biased since I love the base games as well.

Before I begin, I’m not really going to be talking about the Moonsaga expansion because it’s not really something I’m interested in. However, to quote the BGG page:

“This expansion provides players with the means to play all 3 South Tigris games back-to-back, with special goals and abilities across each game.”

The three expansions to the three base games, though, sound really intriguing.

(All photos, except the box covers which are from BGG, are from the Kickstarter page)

The Tides of Trade expansion to Wayfarers of the South Tigris will add commercial opportunities to your exploration of the world.

There will be opportunities to upgrade your workers (maybe getting a coin each time you use that colour of worker), a new red guild, and recruit traders to give you a lot more options while exploring.

It will, of course, make the game have an even bigger footprint, with another side board with the worker stuff and the red guild, but the additions (including a bunch of new cards for each deck) sound really intriguing!

The Body of Books expansion for Scholars of the South Tigris adds another colour!

But this time it’s black, so you don’t have to worry about trying to form other secondary colors and the like.

In this expansion, scholars have been called to focus on medicine (the black track). Doctors will be bringing scrolls and pages to be translated and published.

There will be the new black medicine track, black dice, and actual publishing! Not just translating.

According to the Kickstarter page:

“The expansion brings in more of a focus towards engine building and creating interesting combinations of retired translators and published works.”

It will also have ways to upgrade your starting actions, which will make engine building even that much better.

Finally, there’s the Era of Experts expansion for Inventors of the South Tigris.

This expansion brings twelve unique characters that players can be, each with their own abilities, bonuses, and motivations.

That’s it! Basically.

It’s very rules-light, so it could be played from the beginning.

It looks like they just provide a rules sheet instead of a book, but that is because each character’s special rules are actually on the back of the character tile.

Which is handy.

However, the Kickstarter page also says “Enjoy a quicker 3-round game, without losing any power benefits of the 4-round version” which sounds really intriguing.

Our first play of the base game was 4-player, non-shortened, and it was really, really, really…really long.

We’ve played 3-round games in our other two games, and while I enjoyed them being a bit shorter, they did feel a bit less involved.

So having something that addresses that really caught my attention.

You can back these now (also the Moonsaga) on Kickstarter before February 12.

There won’t be a pledge manager, so if you miss it, you miss it!

Until it hits retail, anyway.

There is that option too.

You can pick and choose which of these you want in your pledge, so have at it!

Are you as excited by these as I am?

Let me know in the comments.
