August 2023 Gaming

It’s hard to believe August is over and we’re in September now!

August was primed to be a big gaming month but it kind of sputtered with me getting sick.

Missing a Sunday probably took 2-3 games (or at least plays) away from my list, and missing work for a week (and not feeling like playing something at lunch this week when I returned) meant I also missed out on the juicy lunch-time gaming that I’m known for as well.

Even with that, given Dragonflight and everything, I managed a good month.

Here’s my list of games played last month.

I was able to get in 25 plays of 22 games, which is much better than July!

Here’s the list in grid format (I love the grid format)

Both of these are thanks to the wonderful Boardgame Stats!

Dragonflight definitely had an impact, though not as much as many conventions because I only played two “new to me” games there (and only three in total for the month!)

Let’s take a look at the month in total.

The month was highlighted by playing a few games I haven’t played in ages.

Like Parade!

This is a great little card game where you are trying to get the fewest points possible.

You have to play a card to the end of the parade, discount the number of cards ahead of it equal to the number you played, and then take all remaining cards that are either the same number as you played or the same colour.

Those are points!

Points are bad.

However, if you have the most of a colour at the end of the game, all of the cards you collected are only one point each instead of face value!

This is a fun little game that I haven’t played since 2016 so it was nice to get it to the table again.

Two other oldies but goodies were Thurn and Taxis and Cover Your A$$ets, both played at Dragonflight so I already talked about them.

The latter was last played in 2018 and the former was last played in 2015 (so definitely before this blog started).

It’s neat to revisit old friends!

Of course, there were my two plays of Combat Commander, my ladder game and another game against my regular wily opponent, Ted.

I didn’t write up the one with Ted because it really wasn’t that interesting to read about. The scenario choice was kind of one-sided and while it’s always fun to play Ted, the scenario itself wasn’t that fun.

But the ladder scenario made up for it, making me a Youtube star because I played our Grand Poobah, Patrick!

Finally, and I know I talked about it a bit in the Dragonflight post, but it was so cool to get The Prodigals Club to the table again.

This is just such an amazing game.

I’m glad that I’m going to have close to 535 games played overall by the end of the year, because that means I’ll be able to do another Top 25 of all time list early next year.

I have a feeling this game will move up from its previous spot.

I look forward to seeing how far!

Some disappointments because of illness and other various reasons.

These include not being able to get another game of Paladins of the West Kingdom as I continue to revisit that one and see how it fares against the other West Kingdom games now that I’m playing it again.

Another one is that I have a new game, The Barracks Emperors, that I’m really itching to play.

It didn’t get played two weeks in a row, and then in a week where it would have been played, I was sick.

We’ll see if it gets played this week!

All in all, even with being sick, it was a great month for gaming.

I look forward to September being just as good (though maybe not as many plays, with no conventions).

What did you play in August?

What do you think about some of these games?

Let me know in the comments.
