August 2024 Gaming

Commands & Colors - Medieval

It’s funny how sometimes month end can sneak up on you.

I was going to hold off on writing this post for a bit, until the weekend.

Then I realized that my next game day is actually in September!

Who would’ve thunk that?

Not this guy.

So now I can actually write this ahead of time.

August was a pretty good month, though mostly fueled by the Dragonflight convention, even though I only played seven games there.

That convention is where all of my “new to me” games were played, which is why on my Sundays I tried to stick with the tried and true games to make my having to write the new to me post less taxing.

Because it’s all about my comfort.

Let’s take a look at the month that was.

Here’s the list view.

And here it is in grid view.

August was actually a pretty good month for games, not just because of the new to me ones, but also because of the older games that I played.

Thanks to the Boardgame Stats app for these wonderful pictures!

The first older highlight of the month was two plays of Terraforming Mars with the new Prelude 2 expansion. A friend of mine got the Kickstarter and it finally arrived, so we got another play of it in.

Our first one was right at the end of July.

The cool thing about Prelude 2 is that it’s designed to incorporate all other expansions, and you can just leave the cards out that deal with expansions you aren’t playing with.

We don’t really care for Turmoil, so those cards are out.

But we play with Venus and Colonies and those cards are actually very cool.

And as I type this, I realize that our first play of it was really in July, so I mentioned it there!

Our second play with this expansion actually turned into a win for me, though the corporation I played was actually from the Colonies expansion and not the new one.

But we did play on a new map from the Prelude 2 expansion, so that was a bonus.

The new milestones and awards for these maps are so cool. And when you’ve played them enough, you can also randomize all of them too!

I actually won this game, which was also really cool, but not the main reason I enjoyed the game.

I also got some more Doomlings plays in, mainly with the two expansions that I need to review once I have a few more plays completed.

Sadly, that’s going to stretch into September due to player availability.

But a review of both of them will be coming!

After finally being able to buy it off the P500 list from GMT Games, I managed to get a game of Commands & Colors: Medieval in with a co-worker (when our other co-worker was actually away so it was 2-player or nothing).

This is such an enjoyable game, and even though I lost pretty badly, I really do love it.

The final thing, and it was the highlight of the month as far as older games, is a play of Yokohama right at the end of the month.

I hadn’t played this one since 2019 so it was nice to get it to the table again.

I won my first game (against Cal! Which was a highlight) and this time I only came in 2nd by 2 points.

So that made me happy.

Yokohama is the game that Istanbul wants to be when it grows up.

All in all, August was a good month for games, and hopefully September will be the same.

There won’t be any conventions, but Sunday games may make up for that.

Maybe.

What games did you play in August?

Let me know in the comments.

  1. I’m catching up on your posts, but glad to see Faraway on your list. I’ve been playing it almost non-stop over the last week or so. Such a fun little tongue teaser for the brain.
