A Gaming Life
Posted on November 1, 2024 by whovian223
October was a really bad month.
Not just for gaming, but in general as well.
I was sick for a week and I’m still not feeling 100% even a week later after I went back to work.
But for gaming, it really sucked!
There were some good things about it, but I missed three Sunday game days.
The first one, the venue was full due to other reservations (some kind of marathon, the ingrates!).
Then, being sick, I missed two other Sundays.
That was hard. I knew I needed to get better, but part of me wanted to play games!
Not to mention the fact that, being sick, there were no lunchtime games at work either.
However, there were some positives.
Here’s the list of games that I played in October.

Not a lot!
Only 11 plays of 9 games in total.
Thankfully, there were three new to me games, so at least that post will have something to say (though it probably will be a bit delayed.
Here’s that game list in grid format!

Many thanks to the excellent BG Stats app that made this possible!
What were the highlights?
While they were few and far between, they did exist.
I managed to actually get one of my favourite games, The Networks, to the table for the first time since 2019!

It was with the Executives expansion, which I had to teach because the owner of the game hadn’t played it before.
I really love this game, but I had kind of forgotten that because it had been so long.
Playing it again, this game where you are drafting cards (either TV shows, celebrities, ads, or Network cards) on your turn is just so great!
I love the need to make sure your primetime lineup will get you as many viewers as possible, planning for the inevitable aging of your shows.

The Executives expansion makes it all the better because it gives you individual player powers that let guide you on how you want to do things.
Or, if you’re me, you can end up ignoring them and then come in last place.
I really should review The Executives, shouldn’t I?
I’m sad that Gil Hova has got out of game design, though.
This is a real treat!
Another nice treat amongst all the dross of October was Azul, a game that I have played on BGA more recently, but I haven’t had on the table since 2021.

I really do like this tile-drafting and placement game where you are tiling somebody’s bathroom…sorry, I continue to think that’s the theme even though I know it isn’t.
Finally, though it hasn’t been that long for me, a play of Cascadia (last played in August 2023).

This is a great, quick tile-laying game where you having to make the best choice out of bad situations more often than not!
Since I do post about how many different games I played in a year, it’s always nice to get new plays of old games in.
October was definitely good for that.
I also got back to my winning ways in my monthly Combat Commander ladder game, which is always a good thing!
Still, the variety of games played was just not there in October, which is sad.
November will have Bottoscon in the first week, so it should automatically be better than October.
Combine that with (hopefully) not being sick, and I hope to have a better report for November.
What did you play in October?
Let me know in the comments.

This is a blog about board games, with the occasional other post for a bit of spice.
Hope that you’re fully recovered again soon… and that November makes up for everything on which you missed out in October!
