Castles of Burgundy: Special Edition Coming to Gamefound Soon

(Edit: 5/19/22) – The campaign is scheduled to go live on May 24 at 5 pm CEST!

If you’re a “serious” gamer, you’ve heard of Castles of Burgundy even if you haven’t formed an opinion one way or the other.

“Wonderful game! My favourite of all time!”

“That looks so ugly, why would you want it on your table?”

The 2011 Stefan Feld classic published by Ravensburger with art by Julien Delval and Harald Lieske recently got a graphic design upgrade in 2019.

Which a whole bunch of fans hated, but it came with all of the expansion game boards and even a new expansion.

However, that’s still not enough.

Ravensburger and Awaken Realms have announced Castles of Burgundy: Special Edition and that it will be coming to the crowd-funding site Gamefound soon. (Edit: Just discovered it’s scheduled to be launched in “early May”)

And what a deluxe upgrade it looks like it’s going to be.

The other picture on the site is a huge one with all of the stuff, so I can’t show you a preview here.

Go to the Gamefound page to look at it.

However, I can tell you that the graphic design has taken a major shift (the page has some new art concepts so what’s on the page isn’t necessarily what it will look like).

The player boards have been redesigned as well, hopefully for ease of use. Again, there are only concepts on the page so those will change as well.

What’s with the huge 3-D castle in the promo image?

I don’t know.

But the silverling coins look like they will be metal.

What will this all look like?

Awaken Realms and Ravensburger are soliciting your opinion on all of that.

You can check out the draft Gamefound page and leave your comments on what you want out of this (or what you don’t want).

Many have already done so.

Dual-layer player boards so your tiles won’t slide? That could be neat.

All the previous expansions? It better. A new expansion? That would be cool too.

Don’t overdo it with plastic stuff? I’m there.

This game doesn’t need tons of plastic. It doesn’t need to be a $130 US monstrosity of miniatures and plastic doodads that serve no purpose but to look cool and jack up the price.

A graphic design revamp has already been done and so many people hated it.

Will this one do better?

I’m probably not in on buying this one (though I might be, as it is a great game), but I am definitely following it on Gamefound to see what they end up deciding.

What do you think?

What are your wants and desires? Yay or nay? What don’t you want?

Let me know in the comments.

But, more importantly, let them know on the page.

  1. Honestly thought this was an April fools joke when I first read it. So out of left field. I’m semi-interested but depends on price. Not every game needs to be SUPER DELUXE but a nice production would go a long way with Castles of Burgundy.
