A Gaming Life
I am a big fan of the deck-building game Ascension. It was the first real game I played when I returned to the board-gaming world, so it’s always held a soft spot in my heart.
At the beginning of March, Ultra Pro and Stoneblade Entertainment announced an eleventh (holy crap, eleventh????) expansion for this wonderful franchise.
Called Ascension: Gift of the Elements, this expansion brings back a couple of mechanics that I’ve loved from previous editions: Events and Transform.
Events come out of the center deck and will affect play until a new one is drawn. Maybe it will make heroes cheaper to buy, or some other effect.
The difference in this one is that you can pay to transform the events into a powerful hero that will go into your deck and let you do really cool stuff when they come out.
Two new things that also sound like a lot of fun are Infest and Empower.
Infest lets you put that Monster into your opponents discard pile, cluttering up their deck like Curses from Dominion.
Cards with the Empower ability let you get rid of some of these cards, along with some other crappy cards. They will even let you banish a card that you’ve already played? How cool is that?
I’m not going to go into all the details, as Stoneblade does a great job of that here.
But I will say that this looks like an excellent expansion and I’m really looking forward to playing it.
