Colossal Cat in the Box From Bezier Games Coming to Kickstarter – August 29

(Edit: 8/29/23:) – It’s live! And it’s $81 CDN before shipping.

Something to think about…

Exciting news for trick-taking fans everywhere, especially those of the quantum trick-taking game Cat in the Box.

I like to think that Bezier Games decided to release this now because I finally did my review of the game (Editor: “We’ll let you have your delusions”)

What is “this”, you might ask?

“This” is the Colossal Cat in the Box edition of the brilliant card game, coming to Kickstarter on August 29th from Bezier Games.

Apparently, according to the press release, it will be exclusive to Kickstarter, so whether or not it will ever hit retail is unknown.

Designed by Muneyuki Yokouchi with artwork by Osamu Inoue, the Colossal edition will revamp all of the components as well as come with two mini-expansions!

The first expansion is String Theory.

This expansion “adds fun string connectors that allow for larger contiguous areas for your tokens.”

No more having to make sure you have two of the same number in order to get a string of contiguous spaces going.

The other expansion, Doppler Effect, will make it easier to avoid paradoxes by having double-number spaces on the board.

Nothing else so far has been released about these expansions, so I’m not sure how else they will work.

What else will be in this Kickstarter?

Let’s see what Bezier said (allow me to demonstrate my cut and paste skills):

  • Bigger Components
  • Enlarged player boards
  • A pawsitively adorable start player mini
  • High quality cards, now with a white border
  • Larger, customizable central Research board
  • Heavy weight, double sided & colorful player tokens
  • Keep your Colossal Cat in the Box organized thanks to the purr-fectly designed and cat themed GameTrayz™

Here’s a picture with all of the GameTrayz containers.

You can also see the new player boards in that picture.

The cards do have a white ring around the edges of the back as well, but as you can see, the front of the cards are the same.

And, of course, the black cat first-player marker.

You can also, as an add-on (I assume), buy a cute cat plushie!

Probably not for me, but still…

All of these pictures are labeled as “prototype,” so they could change as the campaign goes on.

It all looks very cool.

However, I am still going to be in “wait and see” mode.

After the (in my opinion, as an owner of everything that’s currently out) debacle of the Shards of Infinity Saga Kickstarter campaign, I’m a little leery about these kinds of campaigns.

I know I’ve sworn off Collector’s Boxes now, but this one (and the Shards one) didn’t reach that level of “no way!” for me because these new boxes aren’t any bigger than a regular game box. You can still bring them around to game night!

This box doesn’t look any bigger than the Patchwork box, maybe.

However, what happened with Shards might be happening here, depending on what the campaign looks like.

Given the new boards and everything, it’s not likely there will be an “upgrade” option for those who own the current game. Everything’s been redesigned. The player boards, the research board (there isn’t a picture of the new basic research board, but the press release does mention a “larger, customizable central Research board), the cards, all will be redesigned.

That being said, the expansions don’t seem to add any new cards. They just add Research board options.

So maybe there could be an upgrade pack for those who are happy with the boards and cards they have and just want the expansions?

I don’t know.

The other thing will be price.

The Shards of Infinity Saga campaign was $80 US prior to shipping, and shipping was quite high (yes, I know shipping is expensive in general right now due to the world situation). It was just too much for this Canadian when there really wasn’t much new on offer.

Will Colossal Cat in the Box have the same problem?

Depends on what the overall price is to get everything.

It may be worth buying it all again if it’s not too bad.

Or if they offer the expansions separately.

It’s all in “wait and see” mode until the campaign goes live on August 29.

In the meantime, I will say that everything in this campaign looks cool and I can’t wait to see what will be on offer when it finally goes live.

And if you haven’t tried this game before?

I think this will be a great way to get everything.

What do you think about all of this?

Let me know in the comments.
