September 2024 Gaming

Rock Hard 1977 - Board

September was a weird month for gaming, mainly because we didn’t play a lot at work because various people were away (or we just were so exhausted due to work stuff that we just wanted to hibernate at lunch).

Thus, most (but not all) of my gaming in September was done on our Sunday game days.

Thankfully at least one of those had a bunch of games, which means the totals weren’t too bad compared to the usual.

Here’s my list of games played in September.

And here they are in grid format!

Many thanks to BG Stats for the wonderful app that created these.

It was a slower month overall, but part of that was because a couple of our Sundays involved longer games that took up most of the day.

Thirteen games played (last month was 17) and 16 total plays (last month was 21).

I hope to change that in October!

Unless we play another game that takes up the entire Sunday, of course.

As usual, I will talk about my New to Me games in a future post (probably not tomorrow, but soon), but I did want to highlight some other things.

First, while I had my original play of Rock Hard 1977 in August at Dragonflight, I bought the game and played it two more times, which meant I was able to review it!

Not only that, but the designer (and bass guitarist from the Runaways band from the 70s) Jackie Fox actually commented on the review, stating that I had been spot-on regarding the intended audience from the game.

I have to say that seeing that comment left me really thrilled. Having the designer of a game comment on a review is huge, but having the designer *and* a celebrity comment?

It just made my evening, so thank you, Jackie.

It made what I’m doing all the more worthwhile, considering how many times I’ve wondered if I should keep doing this.

Sometimes you need that little boost to keep going, and I am forever grateful for that.

Imposter syndrome is real, folks.

On another front, I played the Doomlings expansions enough that I was finally able to review them as well.

Considering how little I posted in September, that was a gift!

If you’ve followed this blog at all, you know that I not only like to play “new to me” games, but I also like to play a wide variety of games that I’ve played before.

So playing Teotihuacan for the first time since 2020 was amazing!

Teotihuacan - Expansion Period (Expand the Empire module)

This time we got to use a couple of modules from the expansions as well, mainly the Obsidian and the orange temple, along with the “Expanding the Empire” module, all from Expansion Period.

I managed to win this one by concentrating on technologies and the temples to give me a bunch of points!

I’ve never won this game, and beating Abi at a game like this is quite an accomplishment.

Believe me.

Finally, the first play of Vegas Showdown since 2021 was a lot of fun.

Vegas Showdown - Completed Player Board

In this one, you’re building a casino, trying to fuse both hotel and casino tiles to enable customers to walk from one entrance to the other and experience all of the great stuff you have to offer!

This one I didn’t win. I didn’t even complete my casino!

But it was still a fun game.

As always, there was my monthly Combat Commander ladder game, which was a ton of fun as well, even if I am on a losing streak that I need to rectify this coming month.

Finally, I’ve played Vale of Eternity enough to do a review of it, and I’m one play away from a Faraway review.

Both really fun games.

More to come in the “new to me” post, which has some great games in it as well!

What did you play in September?

Let me know in the comments.

  1. It can be quite a challenge to prioritize games you want to play ‘for the fun of it’ and games that you feel like you have to play so you can create a review for it. Do you have a specific number of plays you want to hit before you publish a review for a game?

    • I try to get at least three plays in, unless it is a very simple game or for expansions, it depends on what they add. Always at least two, though.

Thanks for stopping by and the comment!
