Terraforming Mars: The Legacy of Mars – Coming to Gamefound

Two posts in one day, but when I become aware of something (or in this case, become aware that a link is live even though I knew it was coming before), that’s news!

This may be a day or two old, I’m not sure, but there has long been talk about a Terraforming Mars Legacy game, and now there is an actual link to give people.

Terraforming Mars: The Legacy of Mars is coming to Gamefound…sometime in the near future. No date has been set yet.

The campaign preview is now live, but unfortunately there is no Boardgame Geek entry for it and none of the pictures on the Gamefound page are linkable, so no pictures here.

You can go to the link and sign up to be notified when it does go live.

As with all of the other Terraforming Mars games, this is going to be published by Fryx Games and Stronghold Games.

Here’s the blurb from the Gamefound preview:

“Terraforming Beyond Mars! Mankind has finally dragged itself out of the hole that is Earth’s gravity well, and now has the entire solar system at its feet. We are now ready to take terraforming – the true legacy of Mars – to new worlds! The Legacy of Mars is a fully replayable campaign divided into two parts. In this campaign we launch Part 1 covering missions 1-4. Gameplay is based on the original award-winning Terraforming Mars boardgame, so if you’ve played that game, much will be familiar, while still introducing new mechanics and hundreds of new cards to explore! Since no components are destroyed or permanently altered, the campaign or individual missions may be played again at any time.”

What’s that you say? Divided into two parts?

Yes, not only the game, but the actual campaign is divided into two parts.

This campaign is Part 1 and will have missions 1-4 in it.

Part 2 will be missions 5-7 and will be coming to (presumably) Gamefound in late 2026.

While much of the gameplay will be familiar, the description promises new mechanics as well so it’s definitely intriguing.

And bunches of new cards!

We love new cards.

There is a lot of talk about this decision and I’m not sure where I fall on that topic.

That’s partially because no details have been released yet!

Are they pricing this Part 1 at something like $100 US? If so, maybe doing the whole thing would cost $200+ in one go?

Not that it’s ever stopped Eagle Gryphon or CMON, but still…

Would having the whole thing cause the shipped box to be huge, costing $100 in shipping alone?

Who knows?

I’d be interested in reading the rationale behind dividing it into two crowdfunding campaigns.

I guess we’ll find out more when the campaign itself goes live, and maybe there will be some good explanations about it.

Maybe it’s similar to Pandemic Legacy, which itself was divided into separate seasons?

They have assured people in the blurb on the campaign page that you can play Missions 1-4 and have a “winner” at that point, if you wish.

I also assume that the Part 2 campaign next year will include the option to buy both.

There is a 6-page post and discussion about Terraforming Mars: Legacy in February 2025 on Boardgame Geek. This was based on some behind the scenes photos and acknowledgement from Fryx Games, but obviously a lot has probably changed since then so I’m not going to quote it.

One thing that is guaranteed is that, unlike many legacy games, you’re not destroying anything or permanently marking anything, so this campaign will be replayable without any kind of update pack.

Which is a good thing!

Personally, legacy games don’t really work for me and my game group, but the concept itself is cool.

I will be following it to see just what they’re bringing to the party and how it will be different.

What do you think of this?

Let me know in the comments.
