October 2023 Gaming

October was another month of decent gaming. I was worried that it was going to be a slow month, even though we did get a Sunday game day every week this month.

But I shouldn’t have been concerned, as the last Sunday brought me up to 16 games played and 20 plays in total.

This is pretty much like previous months. Last month, I only played 12 games but 21 times. So 16 games is a great improvement!

One of my work gaming partners was gone for most of the month, but I did manage to get some plays of Twilight Struggle: Red Sea in with my other gaming partner while she was gone, which made up the difference.

Here’s my list of games played last month!

Yes, 16 different games played is pretty good for a non-convention month (August was Dragonflight, so it was skewed at 22 games).

And five new to me games!

That’s even better.

Here is the list in grid format (thanks, BG Stats!)

In addition, there were a few “first time played this year” games which is even better!

With two months left to go in the year, and with a convention coming up in November (I’m already at 109 games for 2023), I’m set for a record number of games played!

I’ve already talked about the “new to me” games for October, so let’s talk about the games in general!

First, one of my highlights of the month was getting Fantastic Factories to the table again after a year’s hiatus (SHUX 2022!).

This is a phenomenal game that I’ve finally played enough to review, so look for that in the next few weeks.

I backed the Kickstarter earlier in 2023 where I got the two expansions along with the base game, but I haven’t had a chance to play with the expansions yet. I wanted to play this again before incorporating them, but now I can.

There was, of course, my monthly Combat Commander game along with another one with my friend Ted (I may do an after-action report of that one, it was a fun one!).

Most of the other games I’ve already played this year, but it was nice to get Carnegie to the table again, especially because my last play was in 2022 so it counts as another unique play this year!

Since my first play was played wrong, though, it was nice to play it correctly. My score improved.

Imagine that!

The new to me games were all very intriguing, so I’m happy I played those.

However, even if they weren’t unique plays because I’ve already played them this year, it was nice to get another Sagrada game in, as well as Ark Nova, which is quickly becoming one of my faves!

Of course, it helps the latter that we played with the Marine Worlds expansion this time.

Does that count?

I think so.

Keeping with my Garphill Games kick, after a month of playing Paladins of the West Kingdom multiple times so I could review it, another play of Wayfarers of the South Tigris was in order.

And it didn’t disappoint!

Overall, it was a great month for gaming.

Just wait until November, when I have a 4-day con to consider along with other Sunday game days.

This post may be a lot longer.

Sagrada was played with our new gaming co-worker, so hopefully there will be a bunch more played in November during our lunch breaks.

With a full complement of four and people actually, maybe, being around at lunch, November could break a record!

We’ll see.

What did you play in October?

Let me know in the comments.

  1. Thanks for playing Fantastic Factories again! Let me know how it is after adding the Manufactions expansion. Many people say they wouldn’t play without it. Also curious what factions you’ll enjoy the most.

    • I’m looking forward to it! Thanks for such a great game.

I’m just sorry it took me so long to play it again.

Last time I did my Top 25 games played, it was the only game to actually move *up* in ratings. I wouldn’t be surprised if that happens again in January when I do my next one.

  3. As per usual, a very varied selection of games!
My gaming month was bookended by SPIEL in the beginning and a little Halloween gathering at home to top it off. Played some spooky games (Letters from Whitechapel, Eldritch Horror) there – and a few shorter card(-driven) ones (1848, Watergate).
