May 2023 Gaming

It’s been another slower month of gaming this last May, again because one of our Sundays was cancelled (this month due to Mother’s Day…stupid moms!)

This month, I had the same number of plays (19) as April but only 11 games instead of 13.

But they were still fun!

Here’s that information in picture grid form.

Eleven games, and only two new to me ones!

I’ll talk about those in my cult post.

But hopefully next month will be better for that (though we’ll lose another Sunday game day, with Father’s Day…stupid dads!)

Some noteworthy stuff, though, even with fewer games!

I finished (or just about…mid-way through my final mission) my 8-mission short campaign of Aces of Valor (yes, I’m way behind on actually writing the AARs).

It’s always nice to get another game in of my close to favourite (still not sure of the ranking, and it may change day to day) Garphill Games game, Viscounts of the West Kingdom.

And it was so much easier to get it to the table with the Folded Space insert!

But maybe the new favourite is now Wayfarers of the South Tigris?

That is one huge tableau!

That game is awesome too!

But such a table hog.

One thing I’m really happy for is getting The City back to the table again.

Jump Drive is superior, but I don’t own that one and The City is definitely a good game.

We introduced my co-worker to it this month, including the last play of it yesterday, where we introduced it to another co-worker!

Speaking of Jump Drive, though, two of the games we played included the new Terminal Velocity expansion cards.

I have to admit, having played with those, vanilla Jump Drive isn’t nearly as fun.

The expansion adds so many options! And goals.

And points.

The threshold to trigger the end game is 60 points instead of 50 points, heavily inflating the scores.

I also can’t let the month go by without talking about my monthly Combat Commander ladder game, another loss but with a great opponent who I may end up playing a few times more.

Ted is great and I look forward to our next game.

I was surprised at no Galaxy Trucker, but we had a lot of lunch things going on in May at work, so we didn’t get as many games in as I would have liked.

Hopefully we will in June, since I’m off in July so there will be no lunchtime games played!

So what did you play in May?

Have you played any of these and want to let me know what you think?

  1. Not a particularly interesting month for me overall. My work group missed quite a few days, though we managed to cycle through a bunch of our usual stuff once. Winter Kingdom, Star Trek Five Year Mission, Ra, Potion Explosion, Dominion, Bunny Kingdom, Race for the Galaxy, and Mystic Vale.

Most notably, we got three plays of Food Fight, including the first time I’ve ever had a full table of 6, and I’ve been playing that game since at least 2014. We also got three plays of Can’t Stop in, including one where 2, 11, and 12 went from zero to claimed in one turn each, which was pretty wild.

My wife and I also played two Exit games that I got her for Mother’s Day.

    • I have fond memories of the Food Fight app, but I’ve never seen the actual game in the wild. That’s so cool! I’ve enjoyed Bunny Kingdom the two times I’ve played it, but even though I now own it, I haven’t been able to get it to the table again.
